Coach and minibus hire to Newhaven Fort

With coach hire to Newhaven Fort from JRP Direct, your group travels in one vehicle to the largest work of defence ever built in Sussex, on the cliffs overlooking Seaford Bay. Our minibuses and coaches are based at Buttons Farm in Cross in Hand, near Heathfield, and JRP Direct has been a family-run operator with a modern fleet since 2019. Newhaven Fort suits history clubs, schools, community groups and families, and a visit takes in its Victorian and wartime story, its exhibitions and its group and school terms.

The story of Newhaven Fort

There have been defences on the cliffs overlooking Seaford Bay since the Iron Age. The fort that stands today was started in 1862, following the threat of invasion by Napoleon III, and was the vision of a young Royal Engineers officer, Lieutenant John Charles Ardagh. It went on to play a significant part in both the First and Second World Wars as part of the network of defences protecting the English coast.

Lieutenant Ardagh’s Victorian fort

The History of the Fort exhibition tells the story of how and why the fort was built, with a model of the site where visitors can listen to Lieutenant Ardagh describe his designs and defences. In the Life in the Fort casemate, a Victorian barrack room, uniforms and musical instruments show what daily life was like for the soldiers stationed here.

The Grand Magazine was built to hold the fort’s stores of gunpowder, and today it houses the Hidden Fort film, which takes visitors into parts of the fort they cannot usually see. From the Parade Ground, steps lead down through the cliff to the Caponier, one of the fort’s first lines of defence, whose name comes from the French word for a chicken coop.

Newhaven Fort in the Second World War

When war broke out in 1939, Newhaven Fort became a vital part of the defence against the threat of German invasion. Thousands of soldiers were stationed in the area, including many Canadians who took part in the Dieppe Raid from Newhaven, and troops also set out from here for the Normandy landings in 1944. The Dieppe and D-Day exhibition covers both, with a film about the raid and models of the landing craft and tanks.

The Home Front casemate shows how everyday life changed during the war, with evacuees, rationing and a Morrison shelter, and visitors can step into the fort’s Air-raid Experience. On the ramparts, the Battery Observation Post and the Royal Observer Corps Post sit at the highest point of the fort, 120 feet above sea level, with views out to sea and across the harbour.

Group visits to Newhaven Fort

Groups of ten or more receive discounted entry of £2 off per person, and the fort can show groups an introductory film with English or French subtitles and, subject to availability, give a welcome talk introducing the site. The fort has a café, a gift shop and plenty of picnic benches, and free seasonal worksheets and trails are available for younger visitors.

School trips to Newhaven Fort

School visits include a free teacher preview visit, one free adult place for every five children, an under-cover lunch area, bag and coat storage and a staff welcome so there is no queuing at the gate. The Home Front Object Handling Workshop costs £6.50 per child and has pupils working as history detectives with original Second World War artefacts, guided by a Fort Facilitator, and it includes an Air Raid experience. Newhaven Fort also publishes worksheets, a model risk assessment and pre-visit and follow-up activities for teachers.
